On 26 May 2024, 16 migrant domestic workers (MDWs) took part in the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) First Responders training organised by ADEO. This event follows the DARE programme held during April’s monthly gathering at SowCare@Armenian, continuing our efforts to raise awareness among MDWs about their role as first responders in emergencies. The day was thoughtfully planned to equip participants with essential life-saving skills through a combination of informative lessons and hands-on practice.
The day kicked off with an introduction to the concept of Community First Responders. Participants learned about the importance of being ready for emergencies and how immediate help from those nearby can make a big difference. This session set a strong foundation for the rest of the day’s activities, highlighting the value of quick and informed action in critical situations.
After the introduction, the participants jumped into learning basic first-aid skills. Trainers demonstrated various first-aid techniques, focusing on effective bandaging methods. Participants then got to practice these skills on each other, which helped build their confidence and ensured they could competently handle minor injuries.
Following the first aid training, there was a mini break to celebrate the birthday of an MDW born in May. This break included a small celebration with cake, giving everyone a chance to relax and socialise. The celebration highlighted the importance of celebrating personal milestones and fostered a sense of camaraderie among the MDWs, making the day even more enjoyable.
The training continued with a session on CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) and AED (Automated External Defibrillator) usage. Trainers provided detailed instructions on performing CPR, including the correct technique for chest compressions. Participants practised these skills on dummies, gaining valuable hands-on experience. They also learned how to use an AED, a crucial device for responding to cardiac emergencies, ensuring they felt prepared to act in real-life situations.
The next part of the training focused on firefighting. Participants were taught fire safety and evacuation procedures, followed by a fire extinguisher demonstration. Under the supervision of trainers, participants practised extinguishing small fires. This practical exercise aimed to give them the confidence and skills needed to handle fire emergencies effectively.
The event wrapped up with an overview of SGSecure, a national movement aimed at enhancing community vigilance and resilience. Participants learned how to stay alert and respond to security threats, contributing to a safer and more secure community. This session reinforced the importance of being proactive and prepared in various emergency scenarios.
Overall, the SCDF First Responders event was a comprehensive and engaging experience for ADEO’s MDWs. The combination of theoretical knowledge and practical training ensured that participants left the event better equipped to handle emergencies, ultimately contributing to a more resilient community.
